Snared in Acomb!

Only two hours after their new radio link was relaunched, shopkeepers in Acomb were celebrating the arrest of two thieves, including one who was carrying a knife.

A police spokesman said "Without the help of the Retailers Against Crime in York radio link, the offenders would not have been apprehended".

Trader Paul Cuniff said "The radio link had been very successful in Acomb in the past and now its 'relaunched its brought a sense of community amongst the shop owners, because we are all talking to each other.  If you are a sole trader like myself, it makes you feel you are not on your own if something does go wrong".

Fund Our Force!

Retailers in York have thrown their weight behind The Press's Fund Our Force campaign, saying police numbers must not be cut if the war against shoplifting is to be won.

Ian Taylor, a member of RACY who runs Daisy Taylor's Gift Shop in KingsCourt said "Crime costs us money and gives the city a bad name and image and it affects tourism."  He continued "If we have less police we will have more disturbances on the streets and we will have less visitors.  My shop does attract tourists, especially at the weekend.  People want to be able to walk around day and night and feel safe.  When we do have problems, the city centre police are superb!"

Colin Lowe of Debenhams of Davygate said "As a retail manager in the city, and a member of the RACY steering group, I am totally in support of the campaign to maintain sufficient funding to police the city properly.  It is most noticable that since we have had improved policing in the centre, the number of incidents of shop theft, begging, harassment  and anti-social behaviour have reduced.  It would be sheer madness to lose this advantage because of underfunding.
